Software Relationship Delivers Next-Generation Recovery Tool from Winternals Software
(Austin, TX - February 28, 2002) Winternals Software is pleased to announce its release of ERD Commander 2002, an advanced system recovery tool made possible by a new licensing relationship with Microsoft Corp.
ERD Commander 2002 is comprised of a powerful set of diagnostic and repair tools developed by Winternals Software, combined with a portion of the Windows kernel licensed from Microsoft. The result is a utility that allows faster recovery of unbootable Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT servers and workstations, with greater flexibility and confidence than ever before.
Because each ERD Commander 2002 product CD is able to work as a temporary, self-contained operating system, administrators can boot dead and locked-out systems directly from a CD-ROM drive - regardless of the condition of the Windows installation on the hard disk.
"IT professionals who first tested ERD Commander 2002 were amazed at the tool's look, feel, and functionality," said Mark Russinovich, Chief Software Architect. "Winternals' ERD Commander 2002 was built with one goal in mind: fast system recovery."
"Microsoft is pleased to be working with Winternals to deliver the best possible computing experience to our customers," said Jim Cullinan, lead product manager for Windows at Microsoft. "With ERD Commander 2002, Windows customers have a powerful set of diagnostic and repair tools enabling fast system recovery."
The Windows-like environment of ERD Commander 2002 allows administrators to address multiple aspects of system recovery simultaneously, something not possible until now. For example, a user can examine an unbootable system's event logs, check and modify its service and driver settings, look for tips in the integrated Help facility, and browse the local network for replacement drivers - all at once, from an intuitive desktop environment.
Right from the Start button, ERD Commander 2002 delivers a powerful array of tools for troubleshooting, system repair, and data recovery. Functionality that was specially developed by Winternals Software to work in the recovery environment includes: a familiar viewer that provides Application, Security, and System event logs, as well as comprehensive system information of unbootable PCs; a built-in graphical Registry editor; a user-friendly File Explorer that's similar to Windows Explorer; a familiar File Search utility; an integrated Locksmith wizard to reset lost and locked-out Administrator passwords; a built-in text editor; an integrated Help facility; a command prompt window to run user-supplied batch files and programs; and networking capabilities to copy needed files to, or salvage valuable data from, unbootable systems.
Early adopters of ERD Commander 2002 have validated its unique approach to system recovery. During initial tests one IT organization reported that it encountered a disk drive that suddenly began to fail on a Windows XP workstation. Disk errors had corrupted enough of the Registry hive to make a normal Windows start up impossible, so the administrator booted the system from the ERD Commander 2002 product CD. This allowed all of the most current user files to be quickly copied to a network share - which would have been impossible with a recovery from backup, or with other utilities such as the built-in Windows Recovery Console.
"I think this program is spectacular," said Geoff Rance, network administrator for Builders Group of Companies. "It's like a whole suite of repair and recovery products rolled into one."
ERD Commander 2002 operates on Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT 4.0, and provides full access to any Windows file system - including NTFS, FAT32, FAT, and CDFS. Boot CDs can be fully customized to incorporate non-standard device drivers, and optional user-selected passwords help safeguard the security of systems within the purchaser's organization.
Individual licenses of ERD Commander 2002 can be purchased for $399, and volume discounts are available. An upgrade from ERD Commander 2000 can also be purchased. Further details about ERD Commander 2002 are available online at www.winternals.com/erd2002
